LAKE WORTH, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team scored early and often in the first three innings to lead them to a 19-11 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Tuesday night. The game which started at 6:00 pm, took three hours and thiry-five minutes to finish.
The Bucs (30-16) took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Chris Leon and Yas Guierrez scored in the first off a Jack Valdez single. In the second James Young crossed home on a Nick Shaw sacrifice fly.
In the third inning, the Bucs went on a hitting spree that included singles by Valdez, Anthony Iglesias, and Harold Holeness, doubles by Matt Petty and Young, and a grand slam by Petty. The jack was his ninth of the year and his second grand slam this season. The Bucs were up 11-2 after the third.
The Bucs had another productive inning in the seventh, scoring six runs off three hits and two sailfish errors. Leon hit a double to right field to account for three Buccaneer runs in the inning.
Palm Beach Atlantic (17-20) went on to score five runs in the ninth, but were unable to match the Buccaneer offense and went on to fall 19-11.
For the Buccaneers, Leon and Petty each had four RBI on two hits. Leon and Young scored three runs to lead the Bucs.
The Sailfish went through seven pitchers, but the loss went to Buddy Fisher who moves to 2-5 on the season. Tyler King earned the win for the Bucs in five innings of work. King moves to 6-1 for the season.
The Bucs return to action on Saturday, May 1 when they take on SSC-rival Lynn at 11:00 am. The series concludes Sunday with a noon doubleheader and is the final SSC matchup of the year for the Bucs.
