BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team used key homeruns by Yas Gutierrez and Jack Valdez to take the lead and go on to beat the Lynn University Fighting Knights 16-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Tied at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, Gutierrez hit a solo homer to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead. After a Matt Petty walk, Valdez jacked a deep homer to right-center to score two runs and put the Bucs up 5-2.

In the first inning, the Bucs got out to a 2-1 lead off of a two-out RBI single by Ryan Garcia that scored Nick Shaw and Drew Dwelly.

The Bucs (31-16, 12-10) held the three-run lead (7-4) after the seventh inning in which both teams scored two runs. The Bucs’ runs in the seventh came when Gutierrez was driven home by Petty, and Petty came in after a Valdez double.

The Bucs went on to score nine runs in the ninth inning as the result some pitching struggles by the Knights. Lynn (15-33, 5-14) rolled through four pitchers in the ninth; the pitchers accounted for six walks and gave up three hits.

For the Buccaneers, Brian Santana took the win and moves to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Tommy Kahnle earns the loss for the Knights and moves to 2-6 on the year. The homers by Gutierrez and Valdez make thirteen on the year for each player. They are tied for the most homeruns on the seasons.

The teams return to action tomorrow at Lynn to wrap up the series in a noon doubleheader.
