WILSON, N.C.—The top-ranked Barry University men’s golf team posted a team total three-under 281 in the final round to win their first-ever regional title at the NCAA DII Men’s South/Southeast Regional Golf Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. Barry completed the tournament with a seven-under 845 (283-281-281). The Bucs were tied with SSC-rival Lynn after the second round but finished one stroke better than the Knights to earn the win.

Nova Southeastern dropped a spot from the second round to take fourth while Queens College of Charlotte rounded out the top five.

"We had a nice battle with Lynn today, and we're happy we came out on top," head coach Jimmy Stobs said. "This is by far the strongest field we've played all year."

Carlos Velez continued to lead the way for the Buccaneers posting a -4 67 in the final round to finish with a combined 208 (70-71-67). Individually, Velez finished the tournament in a three-way tie for second with St. Leo’s JP Albuquerque and Daniel Claytor of Barton College. Velez was tied for 15th after the first round and 10th after the second.  His final round 67 tied for the second lowest score of the day and was the catalyst to propel him to the top of the leader board.

Carlin was tied for ninth place after two rounds but finished in a three-way tie for fifth with Nova Southeastern’s Bobby Bode and Lynn’s Marcus Williams.

"I'm very happy that Carlos and Chris played very solid golf over the last three days" Stobs said.

For the remaining Buccaneers, Guillermo Pumarol finished with a two-over 215 (71-72-72) and in a tie for 20th overall. He moved up five spots on the day. "It really feels good," Stobs said. "The guys fought really hard. They feel good and they should. They worked really hard to achieve this," added Stobs.

With the win, the men’s team moves onto the DII National Championship in Noblesville, Ind. On May 18-21. The men’s golf team, which won the National Championship in 2007, had a strong showing in last year’s tournament, finishing fourth overall.  Along with the Buccaneers, Lynn, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern, and Queens University of Charlotte move onto the national tournament.
