MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The second-ranked Barry Buccaneers steam-rolled the #38 Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 5-0 to advance to the finals of the 2010 NCAA Division II South Region-I Women’s Tennis Tournament at Buccaneer Tennis Center on Friday.
The Bucs (20-3) were simply too much for the Sailfish (11-10), losing a total of eight games in the five matches which finished.
In doubles, the Bucs took the top and bottom flights by identical 8-1 scores. At the top, the sixth-ranked pair of Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina rolled through Lina Rubiano and Natalia Trotter. At number three, Caroline Wendling and Darya Yablonskaya dominated Jordan Ittersagen and Krishna Domenech.
At the number two, PBA’s Natalie Aleman and Amber Braaten led 3-2, but Barry’s Angie Werschel and Julia Stas came back for an 8-4 win to complete the sweep.
In singles, Yablonskaya made short work of Domenech, winning 6-1, 6-0 at number six. Stas then closed out the match at number five moments before Wendling could finish at number three. Wendling led 6-0, 5-0 and had match point when Stas closed out Ittersagen 6-0, 6-1.
The Bucs will now face the winner of the West Florida/Rollins semifinal at 8:30 am on Saturday, May 8 for the right to advance to the National Finals at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
