DAVIE, Florida.— The Barry University volleyball team (3-1) finished play at the NSU Shark Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs finished the day with two wins; first with a 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-21,14,25,15-10) defeat of Arkansas Tech, then in a five-set thriller (28-30, 28-30, 25-23, 27-25, 17-15) over Christian Brothers.

“It’s fantastic to take two regional victories here today,” head coach Frederico Santos said. “It really shows the character of the team.”

In the first match of the day, the Bucs fell in set one and four but overpowered the Golden Suns in sets two and three.

In the final set, Barry got out to 5-0 lead with the help of a Libby Walter ace, an Ady Alcantara kill, and a few Tech errors. After pushing the lead to 8-3 and 12-8 Alcantara and Julia Teixeira had kills to help the Bucs to a 15-10 win. For the match, Alcantara and Texeira had 15 kills apiece while Teixeira enjoyed three aces. Amie Manke led the defense with 12 digs.

In the second match of the day the Bucs won in thrilling five-set fashion (28-30, 28-30, 25-23, 27-25, 17-15) after dropping the first two sets in extra time.

“We really fought for this match,” Santos said. “I think the team will find that the more they fight, the more things will go their way.”

In set three both team were evenly matched throughout the entire game. Tied at 23-23, two Christian Brothers’ errors gave Barry the 25-23 win.

In set four, the Bucs went down 10-5 and battled throughout the remainder of the set to tie it at 24-24. A Stefanie Sveiven kill gave the Bucs the one point edge, but a Christian Brothers’ attack evened it up again at 25-25. Yet the buccaneers took the final two points off a Teixeira kill and an Alicia Guerrero ace.

In the fifth and decisive set, Barry stormed out to an 8-2 lead with the help of kills by Lanie Muys and Lovisa Johansson. Christian Brothers hung tough tying it at 15-15 before an Alcantara kill and a Christian Brothers error gave the Bucs the set, 17-15, and the match 3-2.

For the match, Teixeira had 23 kills. The other Buccaneer hitters chipped in as Alcantara had 17, Stefanie Sveiven had 13, and Lanie Muys had 11. Walter directed the offense with 57 assists while Manke had 22 digs.

“This was a great weekend for us,” Santos added. “Three regional wins is fantastic for us and I hope we can keep the momentum going into conference.”

With the two wins, Barry moves to 3-1 on the season. The Bucs return to action on Friday, September 17 when they kick off conference play against Eckerd at home at 7:00 pm.
