MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University women’s volleyball team started off conference play with a five-set (25-17, 20-25, 26-28, 25-14, 15-8) win over the Eckerd Tritons on Friday in the Health & Sports Center.
Barry (4-1, 1-0 SSC) picked up a win in the first set with the help of 17 combined kills from the Buccaneer hitters. The Bucs and Tritons (5-5, 0-1 SSC) were evenly matched throughout the first portion of set one before the Bucs pushed out to a 17-13 lead. The Tritons would scrounge four more points but the Bucs were too powerful in set one, winning 25-17.
Eckerd took sets two and three, combining for 25 total kills. The Tritons won set two 25-20 and needed extra time in set three, winning 28-26.
The Bucs used another huge lead in set four to take the win. The Bucs and Tritons were tied 5-5 in the early going before Barry ran out to a 14-7 lead with the help of two kills and an ace by Stefanie Sveiven and aces by Milena Bukinac and Ady Alcantara. The Bucs would go on to win set four 25-14.
The Bucs only combined for five kills in the fifth set, but earned a 15-8 win to take the match three games to two.
Teixeira had 23 kills and two aces. Ady Alcantara chipped in with 15 kills while Lanie Muys and Stefanie Sveiven combined for 21. Libby Walter had 55 assists and Amie Manke led the defense with 22 digs.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Saint Leo at 4:00 pm.
