MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers topped the Florida Tech Panthers 1-0 at Rick Stottler Field on Tuesday in a key Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer match.

Marc Rafols connected for the game’s only goal in the 77th minute. Joe Conkleton lofted a corner kick into the box and Rafols came free of the scrum and headed home the goal. It was his first career goal.

In the 87th minute, the Panthers had a golden opportunity go by the wayside. Barry’s Glen Thomas was whistled for a foul in the box, but Gary Ogilvie’s penalty kick was saved by Buccaneer keeper Johnny Rodrigues.

Rodrigues had five saves to post his fifth shutout of the season, while Brentton Muhammed had six saves for the Panthers.

The Bucs improved to 6-2-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the SSC, while Florida Tech fell to 5-5-1, 3-2-0 in the conference.

The Bucs return home on Saturday, Oct. 16 in a crucial re-match with the Rollins College Tars. The Bucs won last season’s regular season matchup 2-0 in Winter Park, Fla., and dispatched the Tars 1-0 in the conference tournament, but fell in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional 1-0 in overtime.
