MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers snapped a six-game winless streak in grand fashion with a 9-0 win over the Chowan Hawks in women’s soccer action at Buccaneer Field Friday night.

The Bucs (7-7-1) started slowly as Melissa Madrid did not break the scoring ice until the 15th minute when she connected on a 25-yard free kick.

In the 19th minute, Melony Poviones stripped a defender at the top of the 18-yard box and drilled a shot past Chowan keeper Kristy Brown for her first career goal.

Barry’s leading scorer Emma Karp connected in the 23rd minute. Poviones crossed the ball from the left to Silvia Lugo at the top of the 18-yard box and Lugo flicked it over to Karp who found the back of the net.

At the 25:00 minute mark, freshman Morgan Garcia scored her first career goal. Poviones fed a pass down to Allie Llaneras at the top of the box and Llaneras passed it back to Garcia who drilled a shot in from 20 yards out.

Lainie Ferring came in off the bench and scored twice in the first half on identical plays. Chelsea Stoeckigt threaded a pass through the center of the Hawks’ defense and Ferring ran on to it rip a shot from 35 yards out in the 37th minute minute. The pair connected again in the 44th minute.

In the second half, Ferring turned into a passer and created assists for Poviones’ second goal in the 60th minute and then fed senior Morgan Ault for her second career goal in the 66th minute.

Madrid closed out the scoring in the 75th minute with an assist from Lugo, the Bucs’ other senior.

Mikaela Barboza and Emily Brunnschweiler combined on the shutout for the Bucs. Barboza did not face a shot, while Brunnschweiler stopped the only one she saw, a 45-yard chip from Chowan’s Katie Duncan after a free kick on the Bucs’ side of the field. Brown had 17 saves, many at point-blank range.

The nine goals are the most for the Bucs this season, eclipsing the mark of eight set against Georgia Southwestern on Sept. 17. They are also the most goals since a 9-0 win over Eckerd on Oct. 7, 2007.

The Bucs travel to Melbourne, Fla., for a key Sunshine State Conference match against the Florida Tech Panthers on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 3:00 pm.
