Volleyball Takes Panthers In Straight Sets

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball teamed moved to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference with a three-set sweep of the Florida Tech Panthers (10-17, 1-11) in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
In the first set, Julia Texieira had the Bucs’ first six kills en route to an 11-3 lead. Florida Tech had two three-point runs to help them close the gap to 17-13 late in the game. Six more Buccaneer kills and a number of Florida Tech errors gave the Bucs a 24-19 lead before Alicia Guerrero ended it with a service ace.
 
Like set one, the Bucs took big leads to open the second set. Barry got out to a 13-5 lead with the help of nine combined kills from Teixeira, Libby Walter, Lanie Muys, Ady Alcantara, and Milena Bukinac. The Bucs continued pressing, getting out to a 22-8 lead  at which both teams were cited for service-rotation errors.
 
The Panthers bounced back and scored eight of nine points to cut the lead to 23-16. Yet kills by Teixeira and Muys gave the Bucs the win in set two, 25-16.
 
In set three the teams were evenly matched throughout the early part of the game. Tied 7-7, Barry took six of nine points, with the help of kills by Muys and Teixeira and aces by Alcantara and Bukinac, to take a 13-9 lead.  The Bucs were strong down the stretch and held on to win set three 25-18.
 
For the match, Barry hit .400 or above in each of the three sets for a combined .474 attack percentage. Teixeira led the way with 20 kills while Muys added 10. Libby Walter was a dig shy of a double-double with 37 assists and 9 digs. The Bucs had 6 total aces, two apiece from Bukinac and Alcantara, and one each from Teixeira and Guerrero.
 
The Bucs return to action on Friday, Nov. 5 when they host Rollins for a Code Red game in the Health & Sports Center at 7:00 pm. Buccaneer fans can listen to the action live at GameCentral.
