MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the Rollins College Tars on Friday evening. Though the Bucs outhit the Tars .270 to .232, Barry was unable to hold a late charge by the Tars in set five.

In the first set, the Tars hit one more kill than the Bucs stormed out to a 8-3 lead with the help of two Lanie Muys kills out of the middle.  Rollins scored three straight to come within two at 8-6, but Barry held off the charge and maintained a two point lead through 13-11. Barry took seven of the next eight points and a 20-13 lead. Three Tars’ errors and kills by Julia Teixeira and Libby Walter helped the Bucs to a 25-18 win in set one.

The Tars and Bucs were tied early and often in set two, a total of seven times. At 15-15 Rollins took a two point lead, 17-15, and maintained it through the end of the set, 25-23.

In the third set, the Tars came out hot and ran out to a 16-8 lead. Barry took seven of the nine points with the help of a kill apiece by Walter, Ady Alcantara, and Julia Teixeira and four attacks by the Tars. Yet three points was the closest the Bucs get as Rollins took set three 25-21.

Like Rollins in the previous set, the Bucs stormed out to the big lead in set four, going up 17-11. The Bucs combined for 11 kills in the run. The Tars went on a 3-0 run, getting close at 17-14. Yet Barry did what it needed to do, and outscored the Tars 7-5 down the stretch to take a 25-19 lead.

The fifth and final set proved incredibly intense for both teams. After the Tars took an initial 3-1 lead, Barry scored the next two points off a Tar error and an Alexis Gandon service ace to tie it at 3-3. The teams were then tied at every point, a total of 12 times, through 14-14. Rollins finally ended it with the last two points to take a 16-14 win in set five.

For the Bucs, Teixeira led the way with a double-double, 28 kills and 17 digs. Alcantara had 23 kills while Muys added 10. The Bucs combined for five aces and Libby Walter had 61 assists.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow when they host Florida Southern at 4:00 pm for Senior Day.
