MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Shanna Suttington hit two key free throws in regulation and sank a clutch three-pointer in overtime to lead the Barry Buccaneers over the FIU Panthers 60-56 in overtime in the Health & Sports Center Saturday afternoon.

The Bucs, who also won 54-40 in 2008, have taken the last two exhibitions from FIU.

With the Panthers leading 48-47 after a Fanni Hutlassa layup with 0:20 seconds left, Suttington drew a foul from Hutlassa with 0:09 ticks on the clock and calmly sank both free throws for a 49-48 lead. FIU’s Michelle Gonzalez missed the front end of a two-shot foul with 0:04 second left, but made the second to force overtime.

In the extra frame, the Bucs scored five of the first six points, with Adrienne Hicks sinking a pair of free throws with 3:03 remaining for a 54-50 lead. After a layup by Gonzalez, Suttington drained a long three-pointer to put the Bucs up by five, 57-52 and they hung on for the four-point win.

The Bucs rolled off a 12-3 run in the first half to build a 28-19 lead at 4:21, capped by a fastbreak jumper by Hicks. The Panthers, however, countered with a 10-1 run over the next 3:36 to tie the game at 29-29. Hicks stole the ball and fed Amanda Frontino for a layup with 0:02 seconds left in the half to give the Bucs a 31-29 lead at the break.

FIU’s biggest lead of the game was two points after Carmen Miroglav hit a three-pointer with 14:56 left in the first period to put the Panthers up 10-8. Their biggest lead in the second half was one point, while Barry’s was five, 44-39 with 4:58 remaining after an Yvonne Houston jumper. The game was a see-saw affair with 13 ties and 10 lead changes.

Houston for Barry and Hutlassa for FIU each scored 18 points. Rakia Rogers backed Hutlassa with 15, while Suttington and Hicks each had a dozen for the Bucs.

Despite 10 rebounds for Rogers and nine for Hutlassa, the Bucs out-rebounded the bigger Panthers 36-34. Freshman Mazel Huyler led the Bucs on the boards with eight.

Barry opens the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 13 at West Alabama at 2:00 pm Central time.
