WINTER PARK, Fla.—Exactly one week after the Barry men’s soccer team fell to the Tampa Spartans 2-1 at Buccaneer Field, the Bucs avenge the loss and advance to the sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over #15 Tampa on Friday. The win marks the first NCAA Tournament win for the program in 10 years.

The biggest question going into the game for Barry (11-3-3) was the health status of the their all-conference striker Mark Anderson. Anderson not only answered the question to whether or not he was healthy enough to play, but delivered the game-winner.

After a scoreless first half, Anderson came out the second half and blasted a left-footed shot home at the 53:10 mark. The play started when defensive captain Joao Garcia cleared the Tampa attack to Sascha Koettig just past the midfield line. Koettig pulled down the clearance and played a beautiful though ball to Anderson. Anderson took one touch and rocketed a shot off his left foot into the right upper 90 to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 tilt.

The Barry defense delivered yet another shutout. Barry keeper Johnny Rodrigues tallied three saves and shutout number 10 on the year. However, left back Joe Conkleton made the defensive play of the year. Tampa began to press their attack with less than 30:00 minutes to play in the game and trailing 1-0. Spartan forward Kamal Malcolm’s shot beat Rodrigues to the far post but Conkleton, standing at the goal line was posed to make the save.

Tampa had another prime opportunity for a goal but saw it spoiled by Rodrigues. 10:00 minutes after half time, Matt Noble lineup a free-kick from 30 yards out. His shot was tipped by Rodrigues just enough to catch the crossbar and sail out of bounds.

Barry moves on to play of the winner of Rollins-West Florida on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3:00 p.m. Rollins will provide a live video feed and radio play-by-play can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network staring at 2:30 p.m. Click on the NCAA DII Soccer Championship logo to access the live video.
