MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers shot down the 13th-ranked Ravens of Franklin Pierce 67-49 in the Cruzin’ Classic Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Health & Sports Center Saturday night.

The Bucs (5-3) blistered the nets at a 61.5 percent pace (16-for-26) in the first half, including 50.0 percent (6-for-12) from three-point range and led by as much as 22 in the period before taking a 39-26 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Bucs pushed the lead to 49-30 on a jumper by Yvonne Houston with 13:09 left to play. But the Ravens (9-3), ranked 13th in the WBCA national poll, rolled off 12 straight points over the next 6:15 to trim the lead to 49-42 on a three-pointer from Brittany Martelle with 6:53 remaining.  But seven points was as close as FPU could get as Jen Mitchell hit a three-pointer on Barry’s next possession and Danielle DeBerry nailed one with the shot clock running down with 4:06 left in the half that put the Bucs up 10, 57-47.

Houston and Shanna Suttington each had 17 points to lead the Bucs, while Deberry added 11 points. Nadia Tijani had nine points and tied DeBerry with eight rebounds. Tijani also held FPU’s Jewel White to 17 points, just six in the second half, a night after she torched Nova Southeastern for 34. Martelle chipped in 14 points for the Ravens off the bench.

The Bucs are off for the Christmas break until Dec 29-30 when they face Wilmington (Del.) and Milligan out of Tennessee at the Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic at Lynn University.
