MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers grabbed their first Sunshine State Conference win with a convincing 77-55 drubbing of Florida Southern in men’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday.

The Bucs (4-8, 1-3 SSC) were in control from the outset, racing to an 11-point lead, 16-5, in the first seven minutes on Marvin Davis’ layup. They push the lead to 28-7 at the 9:20 on a jumper in the lane by Bartas Visinskis.

A three-pointer by Evan White at the 6:22 mark of the first period gave the Bucs their biggest lead of the half at 33-11, but the Mocs (10-4, 2-1 SSC) closed the period with a 18-7 run to cut the lead in half, 40-29 at the break.

The Bucs put the throttle down to start the second half, pushing the lead back to 22 with an 11-0 run to start the frame. Florida Southern got it back to 15 points, 56-41, at the 10:19 mark on a jumper by Cameron Wooten.  But Barry scored 15 of the next 17 points, capped by a nice reverse layup by Evan White at the 6:36 mark to give the Bucs their biggest lead 71-43.

The Bucs beat the Mocs at their own game, knocking down 10 three pointers, including five by Zack Trapp who finished with a game-high 23. Willie Whitfield was seven-of-eight from the field to record another double-double, finishing with 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Bucs shot 55.6 percent from the floor and were a perfect seven-of-seven from the line.

The Bucs held the Mocs without a double-digit scorer as Damon Ellison and Jay Hubble each had eight points to lead FSC.

The Bucs next travel to Nova Southeastern’s University Center on Wednesday, Jan. 12 to face the Sharks at 7:30 pm.
