MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University men’s basketball team racked off their third-straight win in a row on Wednesday evening. The Bucs handed SSC-rival Eckerd a 66-59 loss in the Health & Sports Center.
The teams came out of the gates slowly as the Bucs (7-12, 4-6 SSC) and Tritons (15-5, 6-4 SSC) were tied 10-10 seven minutes into the first half. Eckerd worked out to a seven point lead, 26-19, with 5:13 remaining in the first as Dale Carn sank a free-throw.
Determined to stay close, the Bucs scored eight of the final 10 points in the half to enter halftime down 28-27. Willie Whitfield had eight points in the run while Bryan Van Cott added two.
Both teams stayed close in the second half before a pair of Evan White free throws gave the Bucs a 49-47 lead. Barry scored six of the next seven points to take a 55-48 lead with 5:01 remaining in the game.
The Tritons fought back, getting within two points, 57-55, with 3:19 remaining, but the Bucs remained too strong, sinking six of six free throws and a Zack Trapp three in the final minutes to help them to the 66-59 win.
Whitfield led the way for the Bucs with a monster 27 point, 12 rebound night. Trapp had 16 points while Marvin Davis scored nine. The Bucs return to action on Saturday, February 5 when they travel to Florida Southern to take on the Mocs at 7:30 pm. Fans can catch all the action at GameCentral.
