MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry baseball team scored a combined fifteen runs in double header action on Saturday against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes and came away with one win.

In game one, junior transfer Jordan Wellander started the game for the Bucs and went two and two-thirds inning giving up seven hits and five earned runs. The Canes tallied two runs in the top of the first to put Barry in an early hole. They then added five in the third and one in the fourth to make the score, Barry 1 and Georgia Southwestern 8.

However, the Bucs rallied and collected eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game. With the bases loaded, Drew Dwelly singled to left field to cut the Georgia Southwestern deficit down to six. In the three hole, with the bases loaded, Dean Green walked to collect his second RBI of the season. Matt Petty also earned an RBI after he reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Evan Ashley.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Garcia stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and the Bucs down by four. The senior launched his first home run of the season to make it an 8-7 game.

“We were very proud of how the boys fought back in game one,” Pavao said. “They showed great focus and resolve to stay in the game down by seven runs. It was nice to see that they had no quit in them. But we just weren’t focused enough to win that game. That experience definitely helped in game two though.”

Georgia Southwestern answered the very next inning by adding two runs, and then chipped in another in the top of the ninth to clinch their first win of the season by a score of 11-7.

Petty ended game one going 2-3 with one RBI while Garcia collected three RBIs and went 1-4

Game two started much the same way for Barry as game one of the Saturday double header did. The Hurricanes scored in their first at bat then stretched the lead out to four after a posting three in the second and two in the fifth.

For the second game in a row, the Buccaneers rallied, this time in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Adrian English started things off for Barry with a single through the left side, then James Young and Luis Arrizurieta also singled to load the bases.

Julio Ramos busted things open for the Bucs in the fourth with his two-RBI single with the bases loaded to trim the Georgia Southwestern lead down to three. Green earned his second RBI of the day from a base on balls and then Petty’s sacrifice fly to center field tied the game at six with three innings to play. The Bucs earned four runs on five hits in the fourth.

The game remained tied after the fifth then Barry took the final lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. After two quick outs from Evan Ashley and Dwelly, Green earned a walk to keep the inning alive. Petty ripped a screamer down the left field line for his first double of the season and advanced Green to third. With two outs, Garcia grounded a slow roller to short but was mishandled, scoring both Green and Petty and giving Barry an 8-6 advantage.

Tyler King checked into the game for starting pitcher Brett Hammaker and after a strike out and two ground outs, earned his second save of the season and Barry’s second win.

“We were lucky to get out of today with one win,” Pavao said. “The way we played defensively we could have very well been swept. “

The final game of the Georgia Southwestern series is Sunday, Feb. 6 starting at 1:00 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network right before the first pitch. Click on the GameCentral logo on the Barry athletics homepage to access the event.
