MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers got the 2011 season underway with a 9-0 domination of the Northwood (Fla.) Seahawks on Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Bucs had five matches in which they did not surrender a game, led by Caroline Wendling and Akemi Maehama. Wendling, playing number one doubles and number two singles was perfect, winning 8-0 in doubles with partner Laura Boguet over the tandem of Fiorella Moggia and Andrea Sucre and beating Priseila Duarte 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Maehama partnered at number three doubles with Liz Vargas to win 8-0 over Kristen Walker and Danielle Miller, and then dispatched Walker 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles.
Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak picked up the third doubles point, beating the 20th-ranked combo of Duarte and Christine Novackovic 8-1 at number two doubles.
Mona Mansour also swept her singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Sucre at number four.
At number six, Vargas bested Miller 6-1, 6-0, while Alex Gwizdoski knocked off Novackovic 6-0, 6-3 at number three. Angie Werschel, ranked 23rd, closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over #40 Moggia at number one.
The Bucs hit the road next weekend for three big matches, playing at NAIA #5 Embry-Riddle on Friday, Feb. 11. On the weekend, they get Sunshine State Conference play started as they work to defend their conference title. On Saturday, Feb. 12 they take on #41 Tampa, then face #12 Florida Southern on Sunday, Feb. 13.
