MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rode another strong defensive performance to a 53-49 win over the Rollins College Tars in the Health & Sports Center in Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night. The Bucs held the Tars, the number two offensive team in the league, under 50 points for the second game this season.

Leading by five points at the half, the Bucs (10-12, 3-9 SSC) saw the advantage slip away as the Tars opened the half with a 12-3 run, going up 32-28 at the 14:48 mark on a jumper by Sarah Blackburn.

But the Bucs answered right back, rolling off 14 of the next 15 points to go up 42-33 on a three-pointer by Kisa Duncan at the 6:40 mark. Duncan gave the Bucs their biggest lead, 49-37, at the 2:54 mark on a drive in the paint.

But the Tars (19-5, 7-5 SSC) had one more run in them, cutting the lead to one, 50-49, on a three-pointer by Kristina Mingoes with 29.5 seconds to play. But Jen Mitchell went to the line and sank a pair of free throws, then, after a Rollins miss, Danielle DeBerry hit one of two to give the final margin.

The free throws by Mitchell and DeBerry snapped a string of six straight misses at the line, including the front end of two one-and-ones.

Yvonne Houston led the Bucs with a game-high 19 points, while Duncan tossed in a career-high 12 points off the bench. Kourtnie Berry led Rollins with 15 points, while Mingoes added 13.

The Bucs host Florida Tech on Saturday, Feb. 12. The game, which tips off at 2:00 pm, has been designated a “PinkZone” game to raise awareness of and support for breast cancer research.
