DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry University women’s tennis team beat fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles (NAIA) 7-2 on Friday evening. The Bucs dropped two matches in doubles but won all six singles matches.
In doubles action the Bucs' only win came at #3 where Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak defeated Kristina Marova and Paola Montero 8-3. At the second flight, ERAU’s Ekaterina Kamendova and Rocio Frej Vitallé fell behind 7-4 to Alex Gwidoski and Mona Mansour. However, the Eagle tandem rebounded to tie the score at 8-8 and won the tie-breaker 7-5 to even the match score at 1-1.
The Eagles’ second point of the afternoon came at the top spot where the NAIA top-ranked team of Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Ström downed fourth-ranked Barbi Pocza and Angie Werschel 8-5.

In singles action, all six of the Buccaneers won all six matches. At number one, #14 Pocza defeated #2 Chen 6-4, 4-6, 10-5. At number two, #38 Caroline Wendling beat former Buccaneer Kamendova 6-2, 6-1. At number three, #23 Werschel defeated #10 Vitalle 6-4, 7-6 (10-7).
At #4 singles, Laura Boguet beat Kristina Marova 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. In the fifth slot, Mansour took down Strom 6-2, 6-1. In the final singles spot, Matuszak beat Caroline Nilsson 6-1, 6-1 at number six.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow when they visit Tampa to take on the Spartans in their SSC opener.
