MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball edged past Nova Southeastern 72-71 on Wednesday night. The Bucs trailed by one with 1.3 seconds left, but a last second layup by Willie Whitfield gave the Bucs the win.
Nova (12-11, 5-8 SSC) jumped out to a four-point led, 8-4 in the opening minutes of the first half before the Bucs (8-15, 5-9 SSC) went on an 8-0 run to take their own four-point lead.
The Bucs continued to be hot on offense as they worked out to a 23-12 lead midway through the first. Evan White, Levon Williams, Vladimir Raymonvil and Whitfield got involved in helping the Bucs to the 10-point lead.
Barry’s largest lead of the game, 12, came with 8:05 remaining in the first off a Whitfield layup. The Bucs stayed strong in the final minutes of the first half and entered halftime up 39-32.
In the second half, Nova cut the lead to just one, 42-41 with 15:49 remaining off an Alex Gynes jumper. The teams changed leads back-and-forth through 68-65 when Zack Trapp hit a three-pointer to tie it up at 68 apiece.
After a White jumper, Nova sank three free throws to take a 71-70 lead with just 00:04 seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, Trapp lobbed a pass into Whitfield who sank the winning layup as time expired.
White led the way for the Bucs with 23 points. Williams added 14 points while Whitfield had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
The Bucs return to action on Saturday when they make the short trip to Boca Raton to play Lynn at 7:30 pm.
