Women's Tennis Easily Downs #28 Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis team cruised to their fifth straight win of the season and remained undefeated with a 7-2 w/in against the #28 Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday.

The Bucs started things off taking two of three singles, and posting a commanding 2-1 lead going into their strong singles lineup. In doubles, the Barry team of Laura Boguet and Alex Gwizdoski dropped the top doubles flight 8-4 to the Florida Tech pair of Kristina Huba and Katarina Huba.

The Bucs only gave up two points in both number two and number three doubles combined. The Barry team of Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas took number two doubles 8-2, downing Abigail Greif and Monica Price. Akemi Maehama and Barbi Pocza blanked Abbey Keister and Alexis Weinnig 8-0 to finish doubles play.

At number one singles, Angie Werschel fell to Katarina Huba 6-2, 5-7, 11-9. The Buccaneers would not lose another singles match. Alex Gwizdoski took a 6-2, 6-4 win over Greif at number two singles, while Caroline Wendling defeated Kristina Huba 6-0, 5-7, 10-8. Matuszak dominated Florida Tech’s price with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Maehama also captured a shutout over Stephanie Dohner. To round out singles Lizbeth Vargas tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win against Keister in the sixth singles flight.

The next match for the Bucs is Feb. 25 against the Valdosta St. Blazers in Valdosta, Ga., starting at 10:00 a.m.
