MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— Behind 16 Manny Rodriguez strikeouts, the Barry University baseball team earned their first conference win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Florida Tech Panthers on Friday evening.

The Bucs first run came in the first inning when Chris Leon doubled to second. Moments later he came home off a Matt Petty single. The Bucs’ only other run came in the seventh inning when Petty blasted a solo homer to left field.

Florida Tech’s pitcher, Jonathan Cornelius, threw 12 strikeouts of his own. Together, Rodriguez and Cornelius combined for 28 strikeouts, one shy of the Division II record for combined strikeouts in a nine-inning game set by Florida Southern (16) and Shippensburg (13) on March 11, 1998.

Rodriguez set the school record for most strikeouts in a game (16), breaking the mark of 15 set by Jayson Brown against Palm Beach Atlantic on Mar. 3, 2006.

Rodriguez took the win for Barry, allowing only two hits in nine innings, giving up two hits and two walks in the shutout. He moves to 3-2 on the year. Cornelius took the loss for Florida Tech, moving to 2-1 on the season.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Panthers at 12:00 pm.
