Softball Pounds Out 31 Hits In SSC Sweep Of Tritons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers broke out the lumber to pound out 31 hits in a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader sweep of the Eckerd Tritons at Buccaneer Field on Sunday. The Bucs took game one 16-0 in five innings and the finale 7-4.
 
In game one, Barry (18-4, 6-0 SSC) opened the second inning with eight straight hits to break open an 1-0 game.  Sarah Broeseker and Jessica Tabor hit two-run homers and Amber Durkin added a solo shot in the frame as the Bucs scored eight runs.
 
Paula Mackin (7-1) and Jessica Bevlin combined on a one-hit shutout. Mackin tossed three perfect innings to earn the win, while Bevlin struck out five in her two frames.
 
Alyssa Goldsmith went four-for-four with three runs and two RBI. Tabor, who also had two doubles, drove in six. As a team, the Bucs pounded out 20 hits (13 singles, seven doubles and three homers) to tie the school record. The 36 total bases topped the mark of 33 set on Apr. 2, 2000 at Florida Tech.
 
Triton starter Whitney Bernier (1-5) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in an inning plus.
 
In game two, Barry scored in five of their six frames. Amber Durkin knocked in Grace Collins in the first inning. In the second, Collins delivered the RBI, scoring pinch runner Cassy Zamora.
 
After a scoreless third, Broeseker and Alyssa Goldsmith scored on wild pitches by Eckerd starter Kaitlyn Dougherty (3-4). In the fifth, Natalia Ojeda delivered pitcher Brianna Smith (8-3) with an RBI double. Tabor closed the scoring for the Bucs with a solo homer in the sixth.
 
The Tritons (8-15, 0-3 SSC) scored four runs in the seventh, with Ashleigh Bynum knocking a two-run homer.
 
Smith went six scoreless innings, striking out nine, to earn her eighth straight win. Doherty took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and three walks without a strikeout.
 
The Bucs host the Lions of Molloy College on Thursday, Mar. 17 in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 pm.
