MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s tennis team (11-5, 3-0 SSC) grabbed a pair of wins on Sunday playing in two matches. In the morning the Bucs beat conference-foe Saint Leo 9-0 and in the afternoon the downed DIII Tufts 5-0.
In the morning’s match, Barry blanked the Lions to move to 3-0 in conference play. In doubles action the fifth-ranked team of Emanuel Fraitzl and Max Wimmer beat Julian Jean-Pierre and Victor Lozier 9-8 (7-4) at the top flight. Quentin Vachez and Marco Mokrzycki defeated Pablo Chavez and Tom Gleeson 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, and Sergio Velez and Romain Costamagna beat Aloua Adjenak and Jose Morales 8-3 at No. 3
In singles action, #26 Wimmer played at the top flight and beat Lozier 6-4, 6-1. Eleventh-ranked Mokrzycki downed Matt Nicholson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. At #3 singles, Vachez beat Chavez 6-4, 6-3. Velez topped Chavez 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Costamagna beat Tom Gleeson 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at number five, and Rafael Mittig earned his first collegiate win in a dual match with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Morales.
In the second match of the day, the Bucs handed the Tufts Jumbos their first loss of the season with a 5-0 victory. In doubles action, Barry earned three points beginning with Fraitzl and Velez’s 8-1 win over Kai Victoria and Andrew Lutz at No. 1. Vachez and Mokrzycki beat Morrie Bossen and Mark Westerfield 8-5 in the second flight.
Andy Krasnansky and Ruben Penate paired up for a 9-8 (7-3) win over Paul Kohstamm and Partick Monaghan.
In singles action, the Bucs only needed two points for the win. Number-one Fraitzl beat Victoria 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) for the Bucs’ fourth point, and Simon Raagaard beat Ben Barad 6-1, 6-1 to give the Bucs the win.
The Bucs return to action on Thursday when they host Ouachita Baptist for a tough regional match.
