MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry baseball team scored a combined 17 runs on 27 hits in Saturday’s double header against the Saint Leo Lions and took a 6-5 win in game one and then an 11-5 victory in game two.

Both Dean Green and James Young posted batting averages over .550 for the series with Green checking in at .571 and Young tallying a .556 mark for Barry (22-8. 9-0). Green also posted five RBIs as did Matt Petty.

In game one, Saint Leo took an early lead after scoring one run in the top of the first off Barry starter Corey Witkowski. But the Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the first. After Drew Dwelly struck out, Adrian English up the middle to bring up Green. Green launched the first pitch of his at bat off the Health and Sports Center well beyond the center field fence to give Barry a 2-1 advantage.

Then in the bottom of the second the Bucs added another two when English lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Harold Holness and Green singled to left field to score Dwelly.

In the bottom of the fourth, Barry posted another run to claim a 5-1 advantage. English first reached on an error by the short stop then scored after Petty ripped a double down the left field line.

Saint Leo battled back collecting one run in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth to tie the game at 5-5 going into the bottom of the eighth. Dwelly stepped into the box to lead things off for Barry in their half of the eighth and took a 2-1 offering over the left field fence to give his squad the 6-5 tilt.

Tyler King entered the game for Jordan Wellander in the top of the ninth and retired the Lions on four batters to earn his seventh save of the season.

Witkowski went six innings giving up 11 hits, striking out one and walking one with three earned runs. Barry totaled 12 hits in the game. Green, Leon, Holness and Ryan Garcia all posted multi-hit games.

In the second game of the double header, Barry started the scoring off first in the second inning. Young started the second frame with a one-out double down the left field line then advanced to third on an Evan Ashley ground out. With two outs, Barry backup catcher, Louis Arrizurieta looped a single up the middle to give the Bucs the early 1-0 lead.

Barry continued posting runs with two outs, this time, in abundance the very next inning. After Dwelly struck out and English was caught stealing, the Bucs unleashed an offensive outpour on the Lions. First, Petty lifted a bomb to left field and scored Green. Then Arrizurieta pulled a bases loaded single down the left field line to score two runs and Holness collected an RBI on another shot down the left field line. Barry continued to power in runs as Dwelly rocked a two-RBI double through the right side and finally with his second at bat of the inning, English’s single up the middle to score Dwelly. When the dust settled, the Bucs earned eight two-out runs in the inning and took the score to Barry 9, Saint Leo 0.

The Bucs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Julio Ramos single and a Garcia double.

Saint Leo tired to mount a comeback with a run in the sixth and then four in the seventh but it was simply too little too late.

Brett Hammaker collected the win and moved to 5-1 on the season as he went six innings with six hits and only one run, tossing an efficient 77 pitches.

The next game for Barry is Friday, April 1 as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to play Florida Southern in a crucial SSC series.
