Baseball Sweeps #14 Mocs To Take First-Place In The SSC

LAKELAND, Fla.—The 28th-ranked Barry Buccaneers swept the 14th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins in a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader at Henley Field on Saturday to take the series two games to one. The Bucs won game one 4-2 and took the rubber game 12-5.
 
In the opener, Corey Witkowski (7-1) went the distance to lift Barry (24-9, 11-1 SSC) to the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks and struck out three. He induced 18 groundballs.
 
James Young had an RBI single in the fourth inning and Matt Petty, who scored ahead of Young, had a sacrifice fly in the fifth off FSC starter Stephen Batman (4-2). Batman went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks and struck out six.
 
Dean Green hit his league-leading ninth homer in the seventh inning off reliever Clay Chapman to extend the lead to 4-1.
 
In the rubber game, the Bucs jumped on Moc starter Ed Sipple early and often. Young belted a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning. In the second, Harold Holness connected for his first homer of the year, a two-run shot as well.
 
After a three-run third inning made the score 8-2, the Bucs broke it open against reliever Anthony Dovale in the fifth. After Dovale walked four straight with two outs to force in a run, Green delivered a bases-clearing double.
 
Brett Hammaker (6-1) worked five innings to earn the win. He allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks and struck out one. Jordan Wellander worked the final two innings, coming in to work out of a base-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth.
 
Sipple (4-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits and a walk in 2.1 innings.
 
The Bucs next play at
St. Thomas in Miami on Tuesday, April 5.
