Women's Tennis Edged By Third-Ranked Knights

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers pushed the third-ranked Lynn Knights to the wall, but fell 6-3 in Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis action at Buccaneer Tennis Center on Monday.

The Knights (19-1, 8-0 SSC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, taking all three doubles and number two singles. But the Bucs (15-1, 6-1 SSC) stormed back to win the first set at all five remaining singles.

Caroline Wendling started the Bucs’ comeback at number three, dominating the 10th-ranked Isabell Raich 6-2, 6-1. Eighth-ranked Barbi Pocza knocked off seventh-ranked Magdalena Eckert 6-2, 6-4 at number one to stay undefeated on the season and unranked Laura Boguet dismantled #13 Jessica Yanoff 6-2, 7-5 at number five.

The final two matches both went to third sets, but nearly didn’t. At number six, Mona Mansour led Andrea Berkova 4-2 in the second set, but began to suffer leg cramps and Berkova rallied to win 7-5. Mansour was then forced to retire leading 1-0 in the third set.

At number four, Olivia Matuszak took the first set from #12 Ioana Ivan and rallied from 3-0 down to tie the second set at 4-4 when Ivan was given a code penalty for language. Ivan rallied, however to win 6-4 in the second set, and then took the third 6-2 after Mansour was forced to retire.

The Bucs close out SSC play on Thursday, Apr. 7 at Nova Southeastern, then play three-time defending national champs Armstrong Atlantic at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Friday at 3:00 pm.
