DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry baseball team split the double header against Nova on Saturday to win their fifth straight conference series with an 8-4 win in game one and a 1-11 loss in game two.

In game one, Barry (27-10, 13-2) fell behind early after Nova scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Daniel Petitbon started out the inning for Nova with a one-out single through the left side. Then after a Cory Witkowski strikeout the Bucs were only one out away from ending the ending. A.J. Regoli reached on a fielding error by James Young and advanced to second to put runners on second and third with two outs. Dusty Maggs looped a single to right field to score two runs and put the Buccaneers in an early 2-0 hole.

The very next inning Dean Green provided an answer for Barry. Adrian English singled to right field with one out to start things off. Then Green blasted the first pitch of his at bat over the left center field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

In the sixth, after receiving the start at designated hitter, Manny Pedrozo launched his first home run of the season to left field in only his 21st at bat of the season. Pedrozo’s long ball gave Barry a 3-2 lead.

Then the Bucs blew the game open in the top of the seventh. Green started off the inning with a lead-off single through the right side, and then Matt Petty added a single up the middle to put runners on first and second with one out. Young squared up a sacrifice bunt that the Nova pitcher dove to catch but fell to the ground loading the bases for Chris Leon with no outs. Leon worked the count to 1-0 and then lined a shot up the middle and collected two RBIs and made it a 5-2 game. Lyndon Coleman reached on a fielder’s choice which scored both Leon and Young and take the score to Barry seven and Nova two.

The Bucs added one more run in the top of the eighth after Pedrozo doubled and then scored on a Coleman single to right center.

Witkowski (8-1) started the game for Barry and took the win, going seven innings, with no earned runs and allowing only eight hits.

After taking the first two games of the Nova series, the Bucs went into game three looking for the sweep.

Brett Hammaker (6-2) received the start and only went three innings after surrendering seven hits and four runs. However, the Barry defense did not help much in Hammaker’s efforts as they committed four errors on the game. Of the 11 Nova runs scored in the affair, only four were earned.

Nova took an early four run lead after scoring two in the first inning, one in the second, and one more in the third. Nova then collected four more runs in the fifth to make it an 8-0 game before the Buccaneers where able to put a run on the board.

In the sixth, Green rocketed a one-out home run over the left field fence to make it a seven run deficit. But the Barry offense could not muster another run.

Nova starter, Sean Tighe took the complete game win allowing only four Barry hits and one earned run while striking out nine Buccaneers.

Green led the Bucs offensively batting .500 with three home runs, four RBIs, four runs and 15 total bases. Pedrozo collected a .625 average for the series with five hits: one home run, a double, and three singles.

The Bucs waste little time as their next game is Monday, April 11 at Palm Beach Atlantic. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
