CORAL GABLES, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team (27-11) dropped a 10-5 game to the Miami Hurricanes (22-11) on Wednesday evening. The Bucs had only six hits compared to the Canes’ 16.
The majority of Barry’s runs came in the ninth inning. Dean Green reached after being hit by a pitch. Matt Petty hit a large double to move Green to third. Green scored on a passed ball and Petty got home when Chris Leon grounded out to second. Later in the inning, Manny Pedrozo jacked a homer to left field to score Jesus Garcia.
The Canes struck first in the first inning, scoring two runs. Zeke DeVoss singled and came home off a Nathan Melendres double. Moments later, Rony Rodriguez hit a solo shot to left center to help the Canes to the 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Chris Pelaez hit a double, stole third, and came home off a Dale Carey single. Carey scored off a David Villasuso homer moments later to take a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Melendres singled and came home off a DeVoss RBI single.
The Canes threatened again in the third. Brad Fieger singled up the middle, Palaez reached on a throwing error and Carey hit a single to right field before the Bucs turned a double play to safely get out of the inning.
The Canes went on to score four more runs, three in the fourth and one in the ninth. In the fourth inning, Harold Martinez hit a homer to left center to score Rony Rodriguez and Chance Mack.
The Bucs first run came in the fifth inning. Chris Leon reached on a single to left field. Pedrozo moved him to second with a single to center, and Leon scored off a Lyndon Coleman double down the right field line.
Jordan Wellander took the loss for the Buccaneers. He pitched three innings allowing 10 hits and six runs. Wellander moves to 3-2 on the season. Steven Ewing took the win for the Canes. He goes to 5-1 on the year.
The Bucs return to action on Friday night when they host the Tampa at 6:00 pm.
