MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped a 5-2 decision to the fifth-ranked Rollins Tars in the opener of a Sunshine State Conference softball series at Buccaneer Field on Saturday.

The Tars (41-2, 18-1 SSC) struck for two unearned runs in the first inning after two Buccaneer errors. Krista Rodden delivered a two-run single to right, but was out trying to advance to second.

Barry got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Grace Collins had an infield single, stole second and came around on a hit by Alyssa Goldsmith.

After Rollins plated another run in the second on an RBI single by Monica Meadows, the score stood until sixth inning. Collins again had an infield single and Goldsmith followed with a bunt single and Rodden’s error allowed Collins to go to third. She scored on a wild pitch by Hope Bitzer.

In the seventh, Lawna Hunter and Meadows drove in runs to make the final score 5-2.

Bitzer (17-0) went the distance and gave up multiple earned runs for just the third time this season. She allowed two on five hits and two walks and struck out nine. Brianna Smith (15-7) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits and eight walks and struck out two.

The series concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
