ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.— The Barry University men’s tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to the Lynn University Knights in the championship match of the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Tennis Tournament.
The Bucs battled hard, but dropped all three doubles matches to give the Knights a decided advantage. At the top doubles flight, the eighth-ranked team of Vlad Cirla and Alessandro Sarra upset #4 Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl 9-8. In the second flight, Willie Wolfer and Luca Pavanelli, ranked ninth in the nation, beat Marco Mokrzycki and Quentin Vachez 8-4. In the final doubles match, Sergio Velez and Ollie Lemaitre dropped an 8-5 loss to Alex Voirin and George Laffey.
Up 3-0, the Knights took two points in singles, in the fifth and sixth flights, to take the win. At #5 singles, Voirin defeated Velez 6-2, 6-3. In the final singles flight, Benji Kendall beat Lemaitre 7-5, 6-3.
The remaining matches went unfinished. At the top flight, Wimmer was up a set, 7-6, 3-4, on Wolfer. At #2, Fraitzl almost disposed of Cirla 6-4, 5-4. In the third flight, Mokrzycki split sets with Sarra, 6-3, 3-6, and Vachez was down a set to Pavanelli 6-2, 5-6.
The Buccaneers now wait to see their spot in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tennis Tournament.
