MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—For the first time in school history, the Barry baseball team swept the #8 Tampa Spartans with a 10-1 victory in game one and an 8-1 win in game two on Saturday’s conference double header.

The Spartans came into the series as the top hitting team in the conference but were outscored 25-8 in the three game span. On the defensive side, the Barry pitching staff posted an incredible 1.93 ERA against a Tampa team that averaged almost eight runs a game coming into the series.

Less than 24 hours after he tallied a two-out game winning single in the 12, freshman phenom Adrian English started off game one with his third home run of the season. English lifted a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to score Drew Dwelly and give Barry the early 2-0 lead. The Buccaneers offense continued the thrashing the rest of the day.

Barry added two more runs in the bottom of the third on another English home run down the left field line then two batters later, Dean Green launched a solo shot himself to left center. After three, Barry held a commanding 4-0 lead.

Tampa posted their first run of the game in top of the fourth but Barry answered right back in the bottom of the fifth. Green connected on his second bomb of the game to lead things off then Matt Petty singled to right center. Petty would eventually score on a fielder’s choice by James Young to give the Bucs a 6-1 advantage.

Barry added one more run in the sixth then three in the eighth to take the 10-1 win. Cory Witkowski collected his ninth win of the season with his ERA dipping down to 1.46. Witkowski went eight innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run while only walking one.

Game two turned out to be much of the same story on a different game for Barry. The Bucs took another two-run lead after one then continued to add runs throughout the game on the back of, again, stellar starting pitching.

In the first, Dwelly singled to left then advanced to third on an English double down the left field line. Both Dwelly and English would score on a Tampa bauched double play to give the Buccaneers the 2-0 lead after one.

Tampa then cut the deficit down to one in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Andrew Jones and Heath Pritchard. Barry came right back in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead back to two on two-out RBI single by English to make it a 3-1 tilt in favor of the Bucs.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Barry offense blew up the game and added three insurance runs to give starting pitcher Brett Hammaker a nice cushion. Matt Petty started the rally in the fifth with a solo blast to dead center field, over the 20 foot batters eye. Then after a hit by pitch, a walk and two Spartan errors, the Bucs made it a 6-1 game.

In the bottom of the six, English started off the inning with a walk to bring Green up to the plate. Green came into the game with a 16 game hitting streak but had yet to reach base in the game. In his last at bat of the game, with a 1-2 count, Green turned on an inside fastball and rifled it over the right field fence to take the Buccaneer lead to seven and extend his hitting streak to 17 games.

Hammaker moves to 7-2 on the season after pitching the complete game, giving up six hits and allowing only one run.

English had a dominant series, posting a .615 batting average with two homers, five RBIs and a team-leading eight hits. Green amassed three home runs on the series and tied for the team-high in RBIs with five as well. With 16 long balls, Green leads the conference in the category and ranks in the top five nationally.

The next game for Barry is Tuesday, April 19 against the Nova Southeastern Starks at 6:00 p.m. Live radio coverage can always be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network starting just before the first pitch.
