BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers survived a slugfest with the Lynn Knights to take the opener of their Sunshine State Conference softball series 14-8 at the McCusker Sports Complex on Saturday.
The Bucs (31-12, 16-5 SSC) pounded out 14 hits and drew five walks in scoring the second-most runs of the season.
Amber Durkin got the Bucs on the board in the second inning with an RBI single to score Brianna Smith.
Lynn responded in the bottom of the third after Smith walked Brittany Gross and Katrina Lavadan to open the inning. Both runners eventually scored to give Lynn (10-40, 5-17 SSC) a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, the Bucs broke the game open by batting around and scoring five runs.  Smith led off with a single and Durkin followed with a double one out later. Cassy Zamora dropped a perfect squeeze bunt down and went on to beat it out for a single. Smith scored to tie the game and Durkin went to third. Zamora swiped second and, when the throw got away at second, Durkin scampered home with the go-ahead run. Sarah Broeseker walked and Grace Collins followed with an RBI double. Alyssa Goldsmith delivered a two-run single to cap the inning.
In the fifth, the Bucs tacked on six more. Broeseker and Collins had back-to-back two-run doubles in the frame, while Goldsmith and Jessica Tabor added RBI singles.
The Bucs carried a no-hitter between Smith and Paula Mackin (11-3) into the fifth inning. Mackin picked up the win, while Jessica Bevlin closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Callie Darlin (6-23) tossed a complete game to take the loss. She walked five and struck out four.
The series concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
