MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—For the second time in school history, the Barry baseball team clinched the Sunshine State Conference Title with a 6-2 win over the Lynn Fighting Knights on Sunday’s regular season finale.

Lynn started things offensively in the top of the second inning. The Fighting Knights took the 1-0 in the second and then added another run in the third to make it a 2-0 game.

The Buccaneers rallied back for the second time in the series to tie things up in the third. James Young started the inning off with a one-out single to left center and move to second on an Evan Ashley infield single. After Drew Dwelly reached on a fielder’s choice, Adrian English rifled a two-out single through the right side of the infield to score Ashley and cut the Lynn lead down to one. Dean Green followed English’s single with another single to score Dwelly and tie the game at 2-2.

In the fourth, Barry collected the lead after Ashley beat out a double play with Manny Pedrozo scoring on the play. Then again in the fifth, the Bucs added another run on Matt Petty’s eighth home run of the year. And again in the sixth, Barry tacked on another on back-to-back doubles by Young and Ashley to give Barry a 5-2 advantage going into the seventh.

The Buccaneer offense collected another run in the eighth on a Dwelly single to right field to score Young and take the score to Barry 6, Lynn 2.

Buccaneer started Cory Witkowski went the distance for Barry on an efficient 98 pitches. Witkowski gave up seven hits, one earned run with three strikeouts and only one walk. His season ERA has now dipped to 1.48 with his win total moving to 11; tying the school record for wins in a season.

Young tallied one of his best offensive games of the year with a single to left center, a double and a bunt single. He also totaled two runs scored on the day. Ashley went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run. The first four batters in the Buccaneer lineup, Dwelly, English, Green, and Petty all contributed one RBI each with Petty going 2-4 with a home run.

For the series, the Barry pitching staff posted an incredible 0.93 ERA, allowing only three earned runs and less than a hit per inning with five walks and 14 strikeouts.

With two weeks left of regular season play for other SSC schools, Barry takes a much deserved three week break before the NCAA Regionals on May 19-22.
