ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry University men’s tennis team continued their quest for a second National Championship on Thursday morning with a 5-0 win over the #7 Abilene Christian Wildcats.
In doubles action, the Bucs took a 3-0 lead. The fifth-ranked team of Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl beat #6 Hans Hach and Eldad Campbell 8-4 at the top flight. The Bucs took five of the last six games for the win.
In the second flight, #35 Marco Mokrzycki and Quentin Vachez made a major comeback to beat Bryan Joiner and Eldad Campbell 8-6. The Bucs dropped four of the first five games, but took six straight down the stretch for the win.
In the third flight, Sergio Velez and Ollie Lemaitre gave the Bucs their third point of the day with an 8-5 win over Nick Plum and Alfredo Deiati. The Bucs and Wildcats went up 3-2 before Barry broke the pair, taking two straight to go up 4-3. They closed out the match with two of three for the 8-5 win.
In singles action, Barry only needed a pair of points to take the win. Mokrzycki, ranked #36, dominated his No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Desiati.
Romain Costamagna finished it off with a 6-1, 6-3 win over John Strahl. In the first set, Abilene Christian took the first game, but Costamagna took the final six for the first set. In the second set, he took five of the final six for the win.
With the win, Barry moves onto the semifinals against the third-ranked Concordia Clippers tomorrow at 9:00 am. Stay tuned to the Buccaneer blog and the NCAA’s live stats.
