Men's Golf Finishes Ninth At National Tournament

MUSCLE SCHOALS, Ala.—The sixth-ranked Barry University men’s golf team fired a one-under 287 in the third round of the NCAA Division II Golf Championship on Wednesday afternoon. Currently in ninth place, the Bucs failed to make the eight-team cut to determine the national champion.
 
The Bucs entered Wednesday’s round in fourteenth place with a 612. The third-round 287 was the third best in the tournament, but Barry was unable to catch either Fort Lewis or Barton College, who were tied for seventh place. The Bucs finished the tournament in ninth place with an 899 (312-300-287).
 
"We felt like we were in good shape," head coach Jimmy Stobs said. "We just made too many mistakes on the first day of the tournament."
 
The Bucs were led by Marcus Segerstrom in the third round. Segerstrom fired a five-under 67 in the third to finish the tournament tied for 21st place with a 221 (79-75-67). His third-round 67 was tied for the lowest round of the tournament and ties a Barry record for third lowest round all time.
 
Daniel Stapff and Chris Carlin each fired a par 72 in the third round. Stapff finished as the top Buccaneer in the tournament. He was tied for 16th overall with a 220 (72-76-72). Carlin finished third best for the Bucs behind Stapff and Segerstrom. He was tied for 54th with a 229 (80-77-72).
 
Guillermo Pumarol posted a 76 (+4) in the third round. Pumarol ends the tournament in tied for 60th place with a 230 (82-72-76). Marcelo Huarte rounded out the Buccaneer finishers. Huarte was a stroke behind Pumarol in the third round with a five-over 77. He ends the tournament tied for 97th place with a 242 (81-84-77).
 
With the elimination of 12 teams, eight now advance to a match-play elimination tournament on Thursday and Friday. Second-ranked Lynn leads the pack with an 864 (291-291-282). Abilene Christian continued moving up the ladder. They are now in second with an 878 (298-294-286). CSU-Monterey Bay slid a spot to third (294-293-294) and is tied with top-ranked Central Oklahoma (295-304-282) with an 881. Central Missouri rounded out the top five with an 885 (296-297-292).
 
Newberry College (890—308-298-284), Fort Lewis (894—296-301-297) and Barton College (894—299-307-288) are the other three teams moving onto match play.
 
"I'm very proud of the team's success this season," Stobs said. "We had a very consistent year and are still one of the top teams in the country."
 
SECOND ROUND RESULTS
 
MUSCLE SCHOALS, Ala.—The Barry University men’s golf team fired a twelve-over 300 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Bucs moved up one spot from fifteenth to 14th overall with a 612 (312-300).
 
The Lynn University Knights maintained their lead after the second round. The Knights have shot a 582 (291-291) through two rounds. CSU-Monterey Bay maintained its hold on second place with a 587 (294-293) overall. Abilene Christian jumped two spots to move into fourth place overall. The Wildcats have a 592 (298-294).
 
In the second round, Barry was led by Guillermo Pumarol who posted an even 72 for the day. Pumarol is tied for 48th place with a 154 (82-72). Marcus Segerstron shot a three-over 75 on the second day. He is now tied for 48th with Pumarol (79-75).
 
Daniel Stapff was a stroke behind Segerstrom on day two. Stapff shot a 76 and is tied for 18th overall with a 148 (72-76). Chris Carlin trailed Stapff by a mere shot. Carlin is tied for 71st with a 157 (80-77). Marcelo Huarte rounded out the Buccaneer five on day two. Huarte is tied for 97th place with a 165 (81-84)
 
The Bucs return to action for the third round tomorrow. The Bucs tee off in succession starting at 7:30 am through 8:10 am. Follow Golf Stat for live results.
 
FIRST ROUND RESULTS
 
MUSCLE SCHOALS, Ala.—The Barry University men’s golf team competed in the opening round of the NCAA Division II golf championship this afternoon. The sixth-ranked Buccaneers posted an opening round 312 (+24) to finish the day in 15th place.
 
Second-ranked Lynn leads the way in the 20-team field. The Knights fired a 291 and are three-under par for the day. CSU-Monterey Bay, ranked tenth in Division II, shot a six-over 294 to finish the day in second place.  Top-ranked Central Oklahoma was a stroke behind of CSU-Monterery Bay with a 296. Number eighteen Central Oklahoma and Fort Lewis finished the day tied for fourth place. The Mule Riders and SkyHawks each posted an eight-over 296.
 
Daniel Stapff led the way for the Buccaneers. Stapff finished with an even-par 72 on the day. He is tied for eleventh after the first round.
 
Marcus Segerstrom was seven over on the afternoon with a 79 in the first round. He is tied for 60th. Chris Carlin was a stroke off Segerstrom  on the afternoon. Carlin posted an eight-over 80.
 
Marcelo Huarte and Guillermo Pumarol rounded out the Buccaneer finishers. Huarte is in 79th place with a nine-over 81. Pumarol is right behind him with an 82, tied for 80th place.
 
The Bucs play in the second round tomorrow, beginning at 7:30 am. The Bucs tee off in succession from 12:00, noon to 12:40 pm. Fans can follow live stats by visiting golf stat.com or the NCAA Division II golf page.
