Baseball Dominates Nova To Open Regional Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla.—The fourth-seeded Barry Buccaneers dominated #5 Nova Southeastern Sharks 6-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament on Thursday night at Jim Spooner Field on the campus of the University of West Florida.

Manny Rodriguez (6-3) tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out seven, while Dean Green was three-for-four with a double and two RBI. James Young, Evan Ashley and Harold Holness also added two hits each. Holness also drove in two runs.

It was a pitching duel early between Rodriguez and Nova’s Sean Tighe (5-6). The pair matches zeros on the scoreboard until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the wheels came off for Tighe as the Bucs (36-15) batted around and scored four runs. Young led off with a single on a high chopper to third base. One out later, Ashley singled through the right side, send Young to second. Holness followed with a base hit through the right side as well, bring Young around with the first run of the game. Drew Dwelly stepped up and drove an RBI single to left, scoring Ashley. After Adrian English was hit by Tighe to load the bases, Green drove a ball to the base of the 390 mark in dead center for a two-run double.

In the fifth inning, Tighe continued to struggle. Chris Leon singled and went to second on a wild pitch by Tighe. Ashley ripped an RBI double down the right field line and moved to third on a balk. Holness laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Ashley.

Tighe took the loss for the Sharks (33-17). He worked 5.1 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk and struck out nine.

The Bucs advance to play the host West Florida Argonauts at 7:45 pm Central time on Friday. The Sharks fall into an elimination game against the Stillman Tigers at 1:15 pm.
