MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped to 6-2 on the season with a three-set loss (25-21, 25-14, 25-21) to the Tampa Spartans on Saturday afternoon.
In the first set, the teams were close, tied at 10-10 in the early going. Tampa (10-0, 2-0 SSC) took seven of ten points for a 17-13 lead before the Bucs (6-2, 0-2 SSC) stormed back taking seven of the next ten to tie it at 20 apiece. Taylor Zirwas and Tania Torres had kills in the run. Though tied late, Tampa took five of the final six points for the 25-21 win.
The second set was all Spartans as Tampa stormed out to a 12-7 lead and pushed it to 20-11. They went on to take set two 25-14.
In the third set, Barry worked out to an early lead, up 12-6 with the help of kills by Torres, Mariana Lisboa, Mima Hajdukovic, and Lanie Muys. The Bucs extended the lead to 18-12 before Tampa took seven of the next eight points to tie it at 19 apiece. Though Barry would take two more points off a Muys kill and a Tampa error, the Spartans took the third set 25-21 for the win.
For the Buccaneers, Torres finished with ten kills while Lisboa had seven. Hajdukovic and Libby Walter split 26 assists and Jenna Duddleston led the defense with 17 digs.
The Bucs return to action on Tuesday evening when they host conference rival Nova Southeastern at 7:00 pm for a Code Red game.
