MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team earned their first Sunshine State Conference victory on Monday night with a three set (26-24, 27-25, 25-21) win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks in the Health & Sports Center.

In the first set, the Sharks (2-9, 0-3) worked out to a 13-9 lead before Barry (7-2, 1-2 SSC) took five of the next six points, with the help of a pair of kills by Mariana Lisboa and one apiece by Lanie Muys and Mima Hajdukovic, to tie it at 14-14. The teams were back-and-forth through 24-24 with neither taking more than a two-point advantage. The Bucs earned the final two points of the set off a Nova error and a Lisboa kill to win 26-24.

In the second set, the teams were close in the early going with Barry up 13-12. The Bucs took a four-point lead, 18-14, with the help of one kill apiece by Hajdukovic, Taylor Zirwas, Tania Torres, and Morgan Howard. Nova fought back, tying it at 22-22 late in the game. The Sharks hung around through 25-25 before Barry took the final two points off a Torres kill and a Shark error.

In the third and final set, a rejuvenated Sharks squad hung with the Bucs through 11-11 before Barry took four straight for a 15-11 lead  off of a pair of Torres kills, a Zirwas ace and a Shark error. Nova fought back, taking a 21-19 lead late, but were unable to score any more points as Barry went on to win the final set 25-21. Hajdukovic and Torres earned kills in the run.

Torres led all hitters with 11 kills. Hajdukovic had 10 while Muys had nine. The Bucs threw up a wall on defense, accounting for nine team blocks. Torres had five total while Muys had four. Lisboa led the defense with 18 digs.

The Buccaneers return to action on Friday night when they travel to Malbourne, Fla., to face the Florida Tech Panthers at 7:00 pm.
