ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped a close three-set match to the Eckerd College Tritons on the road on Friday evening. The Bucs fell 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.

In the first set, the Tritons (10-3, 3-2 SSC) took the first three points before the Bucs (7-4, 1-4 SSC) got on the board with a Tania Torres kill. Eckerd stayed on a roll, however, taking ten of the next 14 points for a 13-5 lead.

Barry went on two major runs to cut into the Eckerd lead though; down 20-10, the Bucs took three straight off of a kill apiece by Mariana Lisboa and Mima Hajdukovic and a Torres service ace. Later in the game, facing set point down 24-14, the Bucs went on a seven-point run to cut the lead to 24-20. Jenna Duddleston had a pair of service aces and Lisboa had a kill in the run. Eckerd, however, remained resilient, taking the last point of the set for the 25-20 win.

The Bucs and Tritons were even through 4-4 in the second set. Down 8-10, the Bucs tied it up off a Mariana Lisboa ace and a Taylor Zirwas kill. The teams were back-and-forth through 14-14 before Eckerd took five of the next eight points for a 19-17 lead. The Bucs tied it at 19-19 off a kill and Triton error and took a 20-19 lead off a Lanie Muys ace. Yet the Tritons were too strong, taking five of the final nine points for the 25-23 win.

In the third set, the Bucs first point came off a Lisboa kill to go down 2-1. Down 5-11, the Bucs took six straight with the help of kills by Lisboa, Muys, and Hajdukovic to tie it at 11 apiece. After a Triton rebound that saw them take a 17-15 lead, the Bucs tied it again at 17-17 with two-straight points off of a kill apiece by Hajdukovic and Morgan Howard. The Bucs stayed within two points of the Tritons for the remainder of the match until an Ali McAlvany kill gave Eckerd the set, 25-22, and the win in the match.

Torres led the way on offense for the Buccaneers with 13 kills. Lisboa chipped in with 10 while Hajdukovic and Muys split 15. Duddleston had 18 digs on defense while the team accounted for 55.

Barry returns to action tomorrow for another road match against the Saint Leo Lions at 4:00 p.m.
