SAINT LEO, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team (7-5, 1-5 SSC) took the first set but dropped the remaining three to fall 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-17) to the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday afternoon.
In the first set, the teams opened the match by trading points through 6-6. Barry took a slim 8-6 lead off a Morgan Howard kill and an error by the Lions. The Bucs held the lead through 15-14 at which point they racked off six-straight for a 21-14 lead. Mariana Lisboa, Mima Hajdukovic, and Howard got involved with kills while Libby Walter added an ace. After each team took one more point for a 22-15 game, Saint Leo (7-7, 3-3 SSC) cut it to within one, 22-21, with six-straight points of their own. The Bucs, however, used a Hajdukovic kill and three Saint Leo errors for the 25-22 win in set one.
Saint Leo appeared to own set two, up 16-6 in the early going. The Bucs showed some life, taking five straight to go down 16-11. Yet Saint Leo bounced back, going on a 9-2 run to close out the second set with a 25-13 win.
In set three, the Lions jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead and pushed it to 15-7 midway through the set. Saint Leo went on to take a 25- 14 set-three win, outhitting Barry .238 to -.074 in set three.
In set number four, the teams were back-and-forth throughout the majority of the game with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. Up 19-18, Saint Leo broke the trend by scoring the final six points of the match for the 25-18 win.
The Bucs were led by Tania Torres who had 14 kills. Hijdukovic paced the offense with 26 assists. Walter and Jenna Duddleston led the defense with a combined 26 digs.
