TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry University women’s soccer team dropped a conference match against the University of Tampa Spartans on Sunday afternoon by a final of 3-1.
The Buccaneers saw several scoring opportunities early on but were not able to capitalize.Melissa Madrid shanked a penalty kick after Emma Karp was fouled just inside the box in the early going. However, just a few minutes later, Karp would slip a pass by the Spartan’s defense and find a slashing Madrid who would punch it in for her ninth goal of the season.
The Spartans would regroup and score three unanswered goals in the first half. After a defensive blunder on a ball the Bucs were unable to clear left the Spartan forward alone inside the box where she was fouled by Katie Lamendola.
Lauren Moore would convert the penalty kick to tie up the score. Just three minutes after, Tampa would take the 2-1 lead when a ball played in from the left side was mishandled by the goalkeeper, Melissa Toledo and the Spartan’s Amber Pennybaker would finish the open net opportunity.
The Spartans would tack on another when Cina Salemi found the back of the net at the 39th minute mark and that’s how the teams would head into the intermission.
The second half was a defensive battle for both sides, and the Spartans were able to take control of the pace throughout. The Bucs were limited to just a few opportunities and were not able to penetrate the Spartan’s stagnant defense.
The Buccaneer’s will now travel to West Palm Beach where they will look to get back on the win column against Northwood (Fla.) this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
