TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped a three-set loss to the Tampa Spartans on the road on Friday evening. The Bucs fell 25-14, 25-19, 25-15.
In set one, the Bucs (9-11, 1-8 SSC) struck first with a pair of Lanie Muys aces to take a 2-0 lead. Tampa (22-0, 8-0 SSC) quickly tied it at 2-2, eventually taking six straight for a 6-2 lead. Barry took four of the next six points to go down 8-6; Morgan Howard and Mariana Lisboa each had a kill in the run. Barry had a three-point run late in the game led by Mima Hajdukovic who had an ace and a kill, but it wasn’t enough as Tampa used a five-point run and a six-point run to help them to the 25-14 win.
The Bucs led early in the second set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead with the help of kills by Muys, Lisboa, Hajdukovic, and Tania Torres. Tampa quickly tied it a six apiece, and took their first lead of the set at 10-9. The Bucs kept it close through 15-13 before Tampa went on a 4-2 run to take a 19-15 lead. Barry got back within two, 19-17, off a Tampa ace and an Alicia Guerrero kill, but were unable to hold off the Spartan offense which hit.267 in the second set.
The teams were tied early and often in set three before Tampa took three straight for an 8-5 lead. The Bucs got back within a point, 9-8, only to see Tampa go on a 10-2 run to take a 19-10 lead. The Bucs earned five more points off a Howard kill and four Spartan errors, but ultimately fell 25-15 in the third set.
The Bucs were led by Lisboa who posted six kills in the loss. Torres had five while Hajdukovic and Muys combined for six. Libby Walter led the defense with 10 digs while Howard had a pair of blocks.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow in Lakeland for another SSC matchup when they face Florida Southern at 4:00 pm
