BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry women’s soccer team ended their season with a tough 2-1 loss to arch-rival Lynn in Sunshine State Conference action at the McCusker Sports Complex on Thursday.
The Bucs (6-10-0, 3-5-0 SSC) struck first in the 15th minute. Knight defender Rio Hanlan took a poor touch at the top of the box, giving the ball away to Barry’s Melissa Madrid who took a dribble and buried the goal.
The Bucs narrowly missed a second goal in the 21st minute. Chelsea Stoeckigt lofted a shot from 35 yards out that Lynn keeper Meghan Dolan barely got a hand one and pushed into the crossbar. The ball came down and appeared to cross the line, but not recognized. As Natalie Diaz came in to clean up the rebound, she was called for interfering with Dolan who lay on the ground near the ball.
The Knights (9-5-1, 4-4-0 SSC) took control of the game in the first two minutes of the second half. Scout Howe scored 0:14 into the period, taking a cross from Kirstie Schults and beating keeper Emily Brunnschweiler with her first touch.
Just 2:07 later, Lauren Handley sent a pass through the middle of the Buccaneer defense giving Jackie Hellet a one-on-one chance with the keeper and Hellet delivered the game-winner.
Brunnschweiler had six saves for the Bucs, as the Knight held a 21-9 advantage in shots. Dolan made four saves for the Knights.
