Volleyball Dominates Panthers At Home

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team picked up their second conference win of the season at home on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs beat the Florida Tech Panthers 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18) to earn their 10th win of the season.

In the first set, the Bucs opened up with an 8-3 lead which included kills by Morgan Howard, Tania Torres and Mariana Lisboa. Barry (10-13, 2-10 SSC) maintained a five-point lead throughout the majority of the game. Barry’s largest lead, seven, came off a Torres kill to put the Bucs up 20-13. Barry maintained the seven-point lead through the end of the game, winning 25-18.

In the second set, Florida Tech (6-20, 2-10 SSC) jumped out to a 10-5 lead and pushed it to 18-12 midway through. The Bucs cut it to within five, but were unable to catch the Panthers who won 25-20 in set two.

The third set was relatively close throughout the majority of the game. Barry took a 10-6 lead in the early going with multiple Bucs getting involved on offense. Mima Hajdukovic had an ace and a kill in the run while Lanie Muys, Torres, Lisboa and Howard each earned kills. Florida Tech, however, stormed back with four straight to tie it at 10-10. Barry outscored the Panthers 7-3 over the next ten points to take a 17-13 lead, and held on for the 25-22 win.

It was all Barry in the final set as the team accounted for 18 kills and outhit the Panthers .400 to .241. Barry opened the set with a 10-5 lead and worked out to their largest lead of eight at 18-10. The Bucs rallied for the final six points with the help of a kill apiece from Howard, Lisboa and Alicia Guerrero, and a pair of kills each from Torres and Muys.

The Bucs were led on offense by a trio of players with double-digit kills. Torres accounted for 16, Lisboa had 13, and Muys had 12. Lisboa earned five aces and Hajdukovic had four. Muys led the defense with an impressive seven blocks, three solo, while Libby Walter had 15 digs.

The Bucs return to action at home on Wednesday night when they host SSC-rival Lynn University at 7:00 p.m.
