MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s soccer team came from behind to tie the Lions of Saint Leo 1-1, but advanced in a penalty kick shootout Wednesday night at Buccaneer Field.
The Bucs seemed frustrated early in the first half as they were unable to penetrate the Lions defense after Saint Leo packed in eight and nine players at one time in their own zone. After a scoreless first half the Bucs seemed to gather some rhythm offensively early on in the second half, but a costly foul inside the box by the Buccaneers would provide a scoring opportunity Saint Leo would not miss. Just past the 67th minute mark, Joel Purkiss converted on a penalty kick to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
The Bucs would quickly counter when Mark Anderson was able to head a rebound loose ball inside the box from a Joao Garcia shot for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
The Buccaneers would go on to outshoot the Lions by a mark of 24-11 but neither team found the back of the net in either session of overtime.
In the penalty kick shootout, both teams converted on their first attempts as Johnny Rodrigues' shot was good for Barry, while Purkiss converted for Saint Leo. After Anderson put Barry up 2-1, Andro Hrkac would hit the crossbar and Mark Rafols' converted kick gave the Bucs the 3-1 advantage.
After the missed opportunity, Rodrigues read Bruno Da Silva’s shot, dove to his right for the save and gave Guilherme Oliveira a chance to seal the victory. Oliveira’s penalty kick earned the Buccaneers a chance to face conference rival and SSC regular season champions Lynn University in the semifinals of the SSC Tournament.
