FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team (3-4, 0-1 SSC) fell at the hands of the Nova Southeastern Sharks Saturday afternoon 65-64  in their first Sunshine State Conference action of the 2012 season.

The Bucs got off to a slow start in the first half in large part due to eight turnovers in the period on which the Sharks capitalized, scoring 12 points. After  a hot shooting start for Nova, the Buccaneers clamped down defensively, and 10 first-half points by Evan White allowed the Bucs to cut the deficit to 11, 39-28, heading into the intermission.

The Sharks were also able to build the 11-point lead because of the large free-throw disparity in the half. The Bucs were 0-4 from the line while Nova Southeastern went an impressive 11-13.

The Bucs were out rebounded in the first half, as Nova held a 35-31 advantage on the boards and 18-22 from the free-throw line to Barry’s 6-14 for the game.

Once again the Buccaneers found themselves in a position to win the game when Jermaine Edward’s put-back gave the Bucs a 64-63 advantage with just over ten seconds to play. Unfortunately, the Shark’s were able to score on their final possession and the Buccaneers attempt at a comeback would fall short.

Pacing the Bucs was Chad Renfro with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Jermaine Edwards finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Evan White chipped in 15 points.

The Sharks had four players in double figures including their leading scorer Robert Huntington with 16 points. Shaun Pratl added 14, Teddy Tassy chipped in 13 and Tim Traversa finished with 11.

Next the men will travel to West Palm Beach where they will face Palm Beach Atlantic on Dec. 7.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with live stat and audio broadcast available through the Barry University website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
