Barry University men's golf team tied for second at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Fla., hosted by Florida Southern College.

The Buccaneers, which led after two rounds in the first event of the spring season, shot 296 Tuesday to finish in a three-way tie with Lynn and Florida Southern at 872 in the two-day, three-round tournament. Florida Tech won the event by a stroke, shooting a final round 295.

Florida Southern's Case Gard won the individual title, shooting 67-70-72 -- 209 on the 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Course. Gard's 7-under finish edged Barry's Scott Smyers by a stroke. Smyers claimed the runner-up honor after shooting 70-71-69 -- 210.

With the course playing more difficult than the previous two rounds, Smyers was the only golfer in the tournament to shoot below 70 in Tuesday's final round.

Barry's Marcus Sergerstrom, the second round leader, shot a final-round 76, finishing in a tie for third with Lynn's Marcelo Rozo at 4-under 212. Florida Tech's Christian Westhorpe was fifth at 3-under 213.

Barry's Daniel Stapff tied for 23rd, following a third round 1-over 73 to finish at 222. Simon Forsslund was tied for 53rd at 229, and Bucs teammate Roberto Cacho shot 234.

Barry will compete in the St. Edward's Invitational in Austin, Texas, March 5-6.
