DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the 2012 UAH Charger Chillout with a pair of 2-0 wins, beating both the Lander Bearcats and the Augusta State Jaguars on Friday at Wilson Morgan Park.
In the first game, Paula Mackin (2-0) tossed her second straight shutout, holding the Bearcats (6-3) to just four hits and struck out four. She also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.
Amber Durkin got the Bucs (9-2) on the board in the second inning. She led off with a bunt single, was sacrificed to second by Cassy Zamora and stole third. Natalia Ojeda cashed in the run with a single down the left-field line.
Mackin pushed across the other run in the third with a fly ball after the Bucs loaded the bases with no outs
Amanda Hamby (0-2) took the loss for the Bearcats. She allowed both runs on six hits and two walks and struck out one.
In the second game, Alexis Yohe (3-1) got the win with four shutout innings. She held the Jags (5-3) to three hits and a walk and struck out five. Brianna Smith closed the game with three perfect innings and struck out three to earn her second save.
In the third inning, Sarah Broeseker led off with a double down the right-field line and scored one out later on a double by Alyssa Goldsmith. Smith tacked on an insurance run in the sixth with a solo homer, the team’s first of the year.
Emily Headrick (3-1) took the loss for the Jags. She went the distance, allowing five hits and three walks and struck out two.
The Bucs’ games for Saturday have been push up two hours to try to get them in, prior to expected rain in the area. The Bucs now face North Georgia at 11:30 am Eastern time and West Georgia at 3:30 pm. Livestats and audio broadcasts are available through GameCentral on GoBarryBucs.com.
