MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry women's tennis team beat the University of Tampa, 9-0, Sunday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
It was the third shutout of the season for the No. 4-ranked Buccaneers, who improved to 5-0 overall, 4-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Julie Stas and Olivia Matuszak rolled to an 8-1 doubles win over Meg Wladimirski and Lauren Hewett at the No. 1 flight. Sarah Krohnen and Cristina Valladares beat Leslie Raymond and Megan Mancini, 8-0, at No. 2. Lizbeth Vargas and Akemi Maehama survived an 8-6 win over Thasia Garcia and Briana Ryan at No. 3.
Valladares, ranked 21st nationally in Division II singles, beat Wladimirski, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. No. 24-ranked Caroline Wendling cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Raymond at No. 4.
Julie Stas defeated Garcia, 6-4, 6-1, in the longest singles match of the day at the No. 1 flight. Krohnen beat Hewett, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2.
Maehama beat Mancini, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. Vargas defeated Chloe Pereira, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6.
Barry hosts Valdosta State at 10 a.m. Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center. Both the men and women will compete against VSU that day.
